I am a 1.5 generation immigrant from South Korea who always had a curious obsession over computers and the internet, following after my father's steps as an engineer.

Road to SWE

I have always had an interest in the internet and gaming since a kid.

  • Using online messengers and early social media platforms. AIM -> xfire -> Microsoft Messenger -> Skype -> Discord
  • Learning how to host a classic minecraft server in 8th grade. Learning how to port forward with the sea of ambiguous youtube videos was the biggest hurdle.
  • Learning about Cheat Engine as a tool (and questionably using it in certain games).

Never coded until college. Took the first class, I loved it.

I did personal projects for things I liked interfacing with. So my main sources of learning outside of school was Java Minecraft Plugins and a Python Discord Bot.

The latter is what eventually got my foot in the door to start working professionally as a Software QA Engineer.

Now working as a SWE @ Splunk.
